Google Tag Manager

Google has many services and there is a specific embed code for each one, as well as modifications. For instance, if we talk about Google.Analytics, its code should be added to all the pages, then if you want to track clicks on URLs and forms – there is a special code for that, also to be added to every page, then… Well, every time you want to track something, some code should be added to every page and this may get really annoying. This is why Google developers have come up with an awesome thing – Google Tag Manager. You add the code to the site just once and make all other changes through the web interface of the service.

If you are not registered yet, click "SIGN UP FOR FREE".
After registering, you will get to the container page, the code of which is the one required for Tilda (Tilda > Project Settings > Analytics). Add the name of the account that will be using the containers. Click "Continue".
Add the name of the container – the address of the website you wanted to track with Google Tag Manager. Click the "Web" button, then "Create" to see this page:
The Terms of Service will open. Read it and click "Yes" (if you really agree).
In the top right corner you will see a combination like GMT-XYYYXX – this is what you should copy to Tilda (Tilda > Project Settings > Analytics).

After you insert your Google Tag Manager ID in the required field, click "Save Changes" and then publish the whole project (so that Tilda added the Google Tag Manager code to every page of the project). After you have published all the pages, go back to your account at Google Tag Manager to add Google Analytics to it.
You can add all the new services and counters via the "New tag" box which can be found in top left corner. Click it.
A whole bunch of services will be offered, they can all be added to the Google Tag Manager container. But we only need analytics for now, so let's add it. Click "Google Analytics" and then "Continue".
Choose "Universal Analytics" and click "Continue" to get to the third step – inserting your tracking ID.
After inserting your tracking ID (check out our Help Center to learn how to get your tracking ID). Turn on the Display Network function (if you need reports on demography or you are going to launch an advertising campaign via Google AdWords) and check "Page View" as the tracking option. Push the "Continue" button at the very bottom of the page to go to the fourth step.

Click the "All Pages" box and then click the "Create Tag" button.

All of a sudden, you'll be offered to rename the new tag. We don't really need it so just click "Save".

We are almost there. In top right corner, there is the button "Publish" – all the changes we make will only start working when we publish them by clicking this button. To hint just how many unpublished changes there are, there is a counter next to the button. Let's get down to it and click this "Publish" button.

A window will pop up saying (from left to right) you have:

1 unpublished change:
- 1 tag
- 0 triggers (this one is used for such events as a clicks on URLs, forms getting submitted, etc.)
- 0 variables

We are after the "Publish now" button, so let's click it.
It will get published; you will see a message saying everything is up and the button "Done" – click it. Yay!

If there was no mistake, then soon Google Analytics will start tracking visits to your website.

You can change your current tags and add new ones, for instance, tracking submitted forms or external references.
